Wall To Wall, makers of “Who Do You Think You Are?” and three series of the Channel 4 documentary “Child Genius”, are producing an exciting new four-part factual television series, also called “Child Genius”, for Channel 4. In association with MENSA, we are searching for the country’s brightest and most brilliant young minds to take part in the UK’s first televised Child Genius competition. The series will feature competition rounds on various topics, with questions compiled by leading education experts, along with filming with the children taking part in the competition and their families. The focus is to explore approaches to education and what it means to be a high achieving child in Britain today. We aim to be a warm-hearted celebration of cleverness designed to highlight the talents of gifted children and to make the case for academic achievement as something that deserves to be applauded.
Our research has shown that high performing children love to test themselves and will thrive on this opportunity to be in a stimulating environment with like-minded peers. By bringing the children together in a competition environment, the series will have a strong setting through which to explore themes of child intelligence and education.
We are currently inviting applications from bright children (with the consent of their parents/guardians) to take part in the series. We are looking to feature children between the ages of five and eleven years, born between 1st September 2001 and 31st August 2007. We are hoping that this project will appeal to children in Gifted and Talented programmes but we are also keen to attract children with potential who have not yet had a chance to shine – perhaps more divergent minds, S.E.N with untapped potential or creative spirits.
Given the ages of the children we hope to involve in the series, we are keen to reassure you that we take our obligations as responsible programme-makers very seriously. We recognise our duty of care to all our contributors and the particular additional responsibilities involved in filming with young children in this environment. For this reason, no application from any child will be accepted without full and informed parental/guardian consent; at least one parent/guardian will accompany their children to all stages of the casting process, and in the event that the child is invited to appear in the series, to all filming. All filming will be arranged to take place outside of school hours. We will have a team of specialist advisers off-screen, including a child psychologist and education experts, such as representatives of MENSA, whose role will be to provide support and guidance prior to and during the production of the series.
We will be running a casting website where parents can view information on both Wall To Wall and the series and can provide us with evidence of their consent to their child taking part in the application process. The series is open to 5 – 11 year olds to apply (born between 01/09/01 and 31/08/07) and application is via 10 fun BrainBusters on our website www.childgenius2013.co.uk which went live yesterday.
